At Martha’s Hope: The Martha Vandervoort Center to End Homelessness, we empower individuals and families facing homelessness through compassionate care, practical support, and a pathway toward self-sufficiency. As East Central Alabama’s only low-barrier shelter, we open our doors to everyone, fostering a safe and dignified environment where individuals can begin to rebuild their lives.
Comprehensive Support Services
Our dedicated Empowerment Coaches and licensed social workers develop personalized care plans for each guest, using evidence-based tools like the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Assessment. This holistic approach considers each individual’s unique strengths, goals, and needs, paving the way for sustainable self-sufficiency and well-being. Our care plans connect guests to a full spectrum of wraparound services, including:
- Mental Health Care – Partnering with local agencies, we provide access to counseling, substance use treatment, and mental health first aid, all facilitated through our on-site THRIVE initiative for integrated care.
- Life Skills Training – From budgeting and financial literacy to healthy daily routines, our life skills workshops are designed to equip guests with tools for long-term success.
- Employment and Education Connections – We assist guests in securing job placements, skill-building opportunities, and educational pathways that open doors to stable income and fulfillment.
This intake process allows us to welcome each guest into a safe, secure, and supportive environment where they can begin to rebuild and access needed services. Our staff is available throughout the intake to answer questions, provide assistance, and ensure every guest feels at ease and respected.
Safe and Secure Shelter
Our facilities are designed to be a sanctuary of safety, dignity, and community. We provide:
- 24/7 Security and Facility Monitoring – Our team of facility monitors ensures a safe environment at all times.
- Amnesty and Safety Policies – Martha’s Hope maintains a strict no-weapon policy and offers an amnesty box for disposing of dangerous items, fostering a space free from fear and judgment.
- Hygiene and Food Services – Partnering with organizations and volunteer groups, we provide nightly meals, while our facilities offer showers, laundry, and other essential amenities.
Transitional Housing and Continued Care
For individuals ready to take the next step, we offer transitional housing through The Holloway House. This program extends the support of Martha’s Hope beyond emergency shelter, providing a stable foundation for our guests to transition into independent housing. During this time, guests continue to benefit from:
- Ongoing Case Management – Our Empowerment Coaches support guests through every step of their journey, offering guidance and linking them to resources as they transition to permanent housing.
- Critical Time Intervention (CTI) – This evidence-based intervention ensures a smooth transition for individuals moving from emergency shelter to independent living, supporting each guest in achieving stability.
